In Italy, the sanatoria (regularisation) is one of several ways to regularise immigrants who are already living in the country.
If you are a foreign national without documents, the sanatoria is one of the best routes to obtaining a permesso di soggiorno (residence permit).

To regularise an undocumented foreign national in Italy, the regularisation application must be submitted when the Government opens this possibility.
All you need is an eligible employer who offers you a job contract, and you can apply for regularisation.

If your friends have already obtained their residence permit through regularisation and you haven't, you should know that the Prefettura (Prefecture) must issue its opinion on a regularisation application within a maximum of 180 days of the application.

Sanatoria 2024
You often hear people talk about a “sanatoria 2024”, but you should know that, unlike the Decreto Flussi (annual quota decree), the sanatoria is not an annual programme.
A residence permit regularisation is opened only when the Government decides there is an urgent need to regularise foreign nationals already living in Italy.
Problems with immigrant regularisation
If you did not carefully check that you met all the requirements and had all the documents for the application, you could find yourself in one of these situations.
Notice of intended rejection of a regularisation application
If you have received a notice of intended rejection (preavviso di rigetto, under Article 10-bis) for your residence permit regularisation, remember that you only have 10 days to reply to the Prefettura.
If you submit the wrong documents or do not reply in time, your regularisation application will be rejected and all your efforts will have been wasted.
Rejection of a regularisation application
If your regularisation application in Italy is rejected, the only route left to regularise your status as a non-EU national is an appeal.

Refusal of a residence permit regularisation
In this case too, you cannot go back and ask the Prefettura to reconsider.

A foreign national without a residence permit can be regularised in Italy through the sanatoria, a special measure issued by the Government that “turns a blind eye” and grants a residence permit to people living in Italy without legal status.
