It needs a CONI communication confirming the event and the invitation, plus funds, accommodation and health insurance. It is not the route for working for an Italian sports club.

Below: who needs the visa, the invitation and CONI step, documents, official timing, other routes and refusals.

Reviewed 1 November 2026. General rules from official sources, mostly in Italian, not advice on your case: the consulate in charge decides which documents it needs.

Sports competition visa Italy: what is it and who can apply?

It is one of the 21 visa types in Interministerial Decree no. 850 of 11 May 2011 (Annex A, point 5), where it is called visto per gara sportiva: a uniform Schengen visa of type C. On Vistoperitalia, the Foreign Ministry’s visa portal, it appears only among short-stay reasons, and type C allows at most 90 days in any 180 (visa types and duration).

The decree covers foreign sportspeople, coaches, technical-sports directors and athletic trainers who take part, or are invited to take part, in single events or series of events, professional or amateur, run by national sports federations or by associated disciplines recognised by CONI. Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 fixes which countries’ citizens need a visa (Ministry list: visa-required countries). Citizens of the visa-exempt countries may enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180, and the Ministry names sports competitions among the accepted purposes; for some countries the list sets extra conditions. The same holds for foreigners living in another Schengen State on a residence permit (entry conditions).

Lists change, so check Vistoperitalia. Visa or not, you still face border checks and, unless exempt (for example holders of a residence permit from a Schengen State), the EES (see below).

How do the invitation and the CONI communication work?

Annex A, point 5, requires a communication from CONI for official or friendly competitions held within the federations and recognised associated disciplines. It must vouch for the competition’s standing (the decree says “notoriety”), confirm the invitation to the athlete or sports group, and ask for the entry visa to be issued.

The decree does not say who asks CONI. According to the Integrazione Migranti page of 30 April 2024, the national sports federations present the request, which must arrive at least 15 days before the event. It contains:

the names of athletes, technicians, doctors and officials (relatives, supporters, sponsors and anyone outside the delegation are excluded);

dates of birth, passport numbers and their validity;

each person’s role and where they will stay;

who pays for travel, stay and health care.

Name corrections go from the federations to CONI, so that no visa stays with someone no longer authorised. For team members the consulate uses official lists from foreign federations or recognised sports bodies. To find out where your file stands, ask your federation or the organiser.

Which documents are required?

Each office publishes its own list and may ask for more. In general the Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009), the decree and Ministry guidance point to:

the signed application form and a photograph;

a passport valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the last ten years, with two blank pages (Article 12 of the Visa Code);

papers on the purpose of the trip and the invitation: ask the federation and the organiser what is needed, and carry copies of invitations and bookings (useful information);

adequate means of subsistence, not below the Interior Ministry amounts (directive of 1 March 2000; table in the tourist visa guide). The federation’s request names who pays, but the sources do not say whether that satisfies the consulate: ask the office;

accommodation: a hotel booking or a dichiarazione di ospitalità (declaration of hospitality) from an EU citizen or a foreigner lawfully resident in Italy (Declaration of Hospitality in Italy);

health insurance: the decree refers to a Council Decision of 22 December 2003 and its guidelines, while the Visa Code (Article 15) sets cover of at least €30,000 (Health Insurance for Foreign Nationals);

for minors, the consent to leave the country (assenso all’espatrio) of each parent not travelling with them, or of the guardian (Article 3(1) of the decree); in a delegation, a minor travels with an adult of the group or a relative holding a visa of another type.

How, where and when do you apply?

On Vistoperitalia, check whether you need a visa and which office is competent: the Italian representation covering the place where you legally live (jurisdiction).

Book an appointment (the Ministry says as a rule within 15 days) and prepare form, photograph and documents.

Attend in person. You may be interviewed, and photograph and fingerprints are taken (children under 12 are exempt). See the issuing procedure.

The Visa Code lets you apply at most six months before the trip and, as a rule, at least 15 calendar days before. The consulate decides within 15 days, extendable up to 45 in the cases provided for (issuing times). The 15 days in the Integrazione Migranti page concern the federation’s request, not the consulate’s decision. With fixed competition dates, start well ahead.

The Schengen visa fee is €90 from the age of 12 and €45 for children from 6 to under 12; under 6 it is free (amounts in force since 11 June 2024). Exemptions and reductions exist for some categories: ask the office. An external visa centre may add a service charge, as a rule no more than half the visa fee.

How long does the visa last, and what happens after you arrive?

For a single competition the visa can be requested for the actual length of the event; for a series of events, up to 90 days. Type C never exceeds 90 days in any 180 and gives no automatic right of entry: conditions are checked again at the border.

After arrival, Vistoperitalia reminds you that within 8 working days you must apply for a residence permit or declare your presence. Its Gara sportiva (sports competition) section states that, for entries with this purpose, the permit must be requested directly from the immigration office of the Questura (provincial police headquarters) where you live or are domiciled. The short-stay law (Law 68/2007, Article 1) waives the permit, with only a declaration of presence, for stays of up to three months for visits, business, tourism and study: sports competitions are not on that list, so ask the Questura what applies to you. If you stay beyond the visa, tell the Questura. See Declaration of Presence in Italy.

Why can the visa be refused, and what can you do?

Under Article 4 of the decree, consulates weigh the risk of illegal immigration and the assurances that you will leave when the visa expires, and do not issue it if checks on the authenticity and reliability of the documents, or on the truthfulness of the statements, come out negative. The Ministry also lists entry conditions: a justified purpose and means, no Schengen Information System alert, no threat to public order or national security.

There is no right to a visa, only a legitimate interest (interesse legittimo). A refusal must be reasoned and written in a language you understand or, failing that, in English, French, Spanish or Arabic. You can reapply or appeal, through a lawyer, to the Lazio Regional Administrative Court (TAR Lazio) within 60 days of notification; for family visas the ordinary court is competent, with no time limit (visa refusal). See Italian visa refusal: how to appeal.

What do the EES and ETIAS change? (situation on 1 November 2026)

The EES (Entry/Exit System) records entries, exits and refusals of entry of non-EU nationals on short stays and replaces the passport stamp. Vistoperitalia gives 12 October 2025 as the start (EES page); since 10 April 2026 the system has been fully operational in all Schengen countries. ETIAS, the online authorisation for people who travel without a visa, was not yet running on 1 November 2026: its launch is planned and the date will be announced at EU level.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to take part in a sports competition in Italy?

It depends on your nationality. Citizens of visa-exempt countries, and holders of a residence permit from a Schengen State, may enter for a sports competition without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180; others need a type C visa from the consulate, which gives no automatic right of entry.

Who requests the CONI communication for the visa?

Decree 850/2011 only says the communication is needed. According to Integrazione Migranti (30 April 2024), the national sports federations present the request at least 15 days before the event, with the list of names. Ask your federation or the organiser.

Can I sign a contract with an Italian club on a sports competition visa?

The competition visa is meant for taking part in competitions. For working with an Italian sports club the sources indicate another route: Article 27 of the Consolidated Immigration Act, where CONI’s named assent replaces the work clearance (nulla osta).

How long is a sports competition visa valid?

It can be requested for the length of a single event or, for a series of events, up to 90 days. Type C never exceeds 90 days in any 180-day period. If you stay beyond the visa, inform the Questura.

Official sources

Interministerial Decree no. 850/2011, Annex A – Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italian text)

Vistoperitalia, “Gara sportiva” page – Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italian text)

Residence permit for sports activity (30 April 2024) – Integrazione Migranti (Italian text)

Foreigners intended for sports activities – Immigration Portal (Italian text)

Countries exempt from a visa for short stays – Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italian text)

Visa issuing times – Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italian text)

Refusal of the visa – Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italian text)

Law no. 68 of 28 May 2007, Article 1 (short stays) – Chamber of Deputies (Italian text)

The sources were consulted on 1 November 2026.
