You apply at the consulate for the country where you live, only after the Region has approved the training project. After you arrive, you must apply for the residence permit within eight working days.

This guide sets out the steps in order, the documents, the deadlines, the costs given by official sources, what to do after you arrive and how this visa differs from the study visa. Italian law says tirocinio, which we translate as “traineeship”; the visa portal and many websites call it an internship. For the general picture (promoting body, host, duration, quota) read our guide to internships in Italy for non-EU citizens.

Reviewed 30 October 2026. These are general rules, not advice on your own case: each consulate and each Region applies the rules in its own way.

Internship visa Italy: what is it?

It is the entry visa for people who live outside the European Union and come to Italy for a traineeship of training and orientation. It is a national type D visa for long stays (91 to 365 days). Among the study reasons, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal lists “Studio”, “Studio – Formazione professionale” and “Studio – Tirocinio”. No work clearance (nulla osta) from the Immigration One-Stop Shop is needed, and a traineeship is not an employment relationship. To see all visas, go to the page on types of Italian visa.

What do you need before you apply?

The consulate takes the application after the Region or autonomous Province has approved the project. First you need an authorised promoting body, a host organisation, the traineeship agreement and the individual training project (PFI). The promoter applies to the Region, which has 60 days to decide; the Region’s endorsement (visto) on the PFI lasts 6 months and is not the consulate’s entry visa.

Traineeships of this kind fall within a three-year quota: in October 2026 we found no decree for 2026-2028, so ask the Region and the promoter whether visas are available. SH Immigration Specialists does not look for traineeships, does not sell placements and does not act as a promoting body.

How do you apply for the visa, step by step?

Portal. On Il visto per l’Italia, the visa portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you enter your citizenship, country of residence, length of stay (over 90 days) and reason: the portal tells you whether you need a visa.

Consulate. The application goes to the Italian office responsible for the place where you live permanently.

The office’s instructions. Each office publishes its own list of documents, how to submit the application (through Prenot@mi or without an appointment) and how to pay the consular fee.

Application. You submit the national visa application form and the documents, usually in person.

Decision. The legal deadline is 90 days from the request, and it can take longer if the consulate carries out checks; you may be asked for an interview or further documents.

Entry. Check the data and dates on the visa, enter Italy and apply for the residence permit.

For the general picture of entry visas, see the page on the entry visa for Italy and our guide to how to get an Italian entry visa.

Internship visa Italy: which documents do you need?

The national sources list these documents: your passport, a copy of the traineeship agreement and of the PFI endorsed by the Region, and proof of means of support. Consulates add more, and they are not all the same. These four examples come from the offices’ own pages, read on 30 October 2026, and are not a general rule.

Office

How to apply

What the page asks for, besides the approved project

Bogotá

In person only, no agencies and no appointment, from 6 months to 15 working days before the start.

INAIL and civil-liability policies in the project; a “Luce Verde” from the Embassy’s study office; a B2 certificate in the language of the traineeship; means of EUR 27.89 a day (EUR 10,179.85 for 365 days); lodging for the first 30 nights; EUR 30,000 insurance; return flight.

Paris

Appointment on Prenot@mi; documents are handed in on the day of the appointment; examination up to 90 days.

PFI entered in the PIT platform; B2 certificate; EUR 10,179.85 a year from traceable sources (bank statements or a guarantee from a relative up to the fourth degree); suitable lodging (a hotel booking must cover at least 30 days); policy with no limit for urgent hospital care; proof of residence in France.

Dhaka

The list does not say how to apply.

Agreement; passport valid for at least 15 months from the application; 12 months of bank statements; apostilled degree; EUR 30,000 policy. The consular fee depends on the type of visa and on the office, and the official sources we read do not agree on the amount for type D study visas. Practice also differs: in Bogotá you attach the receipt of the bank payment to the application, in Paris you pay in cash, with the exact amount. As a rule the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused, unless the application is inadmissible. Check the fee on the consulate’s website before paying.

For the residence permit, the Immigration Portal gives EUR 116.46 in total for a duration of more than three months and up to one year (tables of 22 July 2024).

What happens after you arrive in Italy?

Within eight working days of entering Italy you must apply for the residence permit (article 5(2) of the Consolidated Immigration Act). For the permit for traineeships, which the Immigration Portal calls “Code 33”, you apply with the postal kit at authorised post offices (Sportello Amico); the Questura then calls you in for fingerprints and photographs. The kit includes Form 1, a full copy of your passport, a copy of the traineeship agreement stamped by the consulate when it issued the visa, and a copy of a health or accident policy valid in Italy for the whole duration of the permit.

The declaration of presence covers stays of up to three months: for a longer traineeship you apply for the permit, as our guide to the declaration of presence explains. The steps of the kit are on the page about applying for a residence permit.

How long does the traineeship permit last, and can you work?

The official pages we read do not state the duration of the permit: look at the expiry date printed on the document. The traineeship lasts 3 to 12 months, extensions included; if it is extended, the permit may need to be renewed, again with the postal kit. For renewals, the Consolidated Act, in the text that applies from 22 May 2026, provides for the request at least 90 days before expiry, “without prejudice to different terms”, while some official pages still give shorter terms (60 or 30 days): ask the Questura which one applies to you.

A permit for study or training also allows subordinate work for up to 20 hours a week, within a ceiling of 1,040 hours a year. The traineeship itself is not work. At the end of the traineeship, if the permit is still valid, you can apply to convert it into a work permit: see our guide to converting a study permit into a work permit.

How does the internship visa differ from the study visa?

Prior approval: for a traineeship the Region decides on the PFI; for university study there is pre-enrolment on Universitaly, with the deadlines of the ministerial circular.

Who you need: for a traineeship, a promoter and a host; for study, a university or institute that admits you.

Quota: the extracurricular traineeship falls within the three-year quota; the university study visa does not.

Permit: the Portal distinguishes “Code 33” (trainee) from “Code 24” (study).

For the other route, read our study visa guide.

What happens if the visa is refused?

Submitting all the documents does not guarantee the visa: the consulate assesses each application. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the refusal decision cannot be changed, but you can submit a new application or an appeal. For national visas that are not for family reasons, the Ministry indicates an appeal to the Lazio Regional Administrative Court (TAR) within 60 days of notification, with a lawyer. The rules are in our guide to Italian visa refusal and appeals.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to do a traineeship in Italy?

Yes, if you are a non-EU citizen living abroad: you need a national type D visa for study or training, requested at the consulate after the Region has approved the project. People already in Italy with a valid permit follow another procedure, described in the guide to traineeships for non-EU citizens.

How long does the visa take?

The Region has 60 days to decide and its endorsement of the project lasts 6 months. The legal deadline for the entry visa is 90 days from the request, but it can take longer if the consulate carries out checks. Real times depend on the office and the case.

How much does the visa cost?

There is no single amount: the consular fee depends on the type of visa and the office, and the official sources we read do not agree for type D study visas. Check the consulate’s tariff. For a residence permit of more than three months and up to one year the Immigration Portal gives EUR 116.46 in total.

Can I work with a traineeship permit?

A permit for study or training allows subordinate work for up to 20 hours a week, within a ceiling of 1,040 hours a year. The traineeship itself is not work. At the end, if the permit is still valid, you can apply to convert it into a work permit.

Official sources

Tirocini formativi (traineeships) – Ministry of Labour and Social Policies (Italian text)

Vademecum on traineeships for citizens resident in a third country (September 2022) – Ministry of Labour (Italian text)

Il visto per l’Italia (visa portal) – Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Frequently asked questions on visas to enter Italy – Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italian text)

Study visa for an extracurricular traineeship (example) – Embassy of Italy in Bogotá (Italian text)

Code 33, residence permit for trainees – Immigration Portal, Ministry of the Interior (Italian text)

Cost tables for the residence permit – Immigration Portal, Ministry of the Interior (Italian text)

Official Gazette no. 115 of 20 May 2026, Legislative Decree 83/2026 (article 5 of the Consolidated Act) (Italian text)

The sources were consulted on 30 October 2026, including the pages of the Paris, Dhaka and Boston consulates cited in the table, which show no update date.
