As a formula: threshold = social allowance + (half of the social allowance × number of family members).

Two examples with the 2026 figures:

A worker applies to bring his wife. That is 1 family member: €7,101.12 + €3,550.56 = €10,651.68 a year.

A family applies to bring a spouse and two children under 14. That is 3 family members: €7,101.12 + (€3,550.56 × 3) = €17,752.80 a year.

Which income counts

What counts is the annual income from lawful sources, for example from employment or self-employment. To prove that the income is available, the income of the family members who live with the applicant is taken into account as well as the applicant’s own: if your wife already lives with you and works, her income is added to yours.

It is usually proved with the tax certificate (Certificazione Unica) or tax return, the employment contract and the latest payslips; if the job started less than a year ago, the employer can state the expected income in form S3. The full list of documents, by type of work, is in our family reunification guide. Refugees and holders of subsidiary protection do not have to prove a minimum income.

What to do if your income is not enough

An income below the threshold does not always close the door. Before giving up, check these points:

Add the income of family members who live with you. The income of your spouse or of other relatives living with you is added to yours.

Check that you counted every lawful source you can document, not only your main job.

Consider filing more than one application at different times. The threshold depends on the number of family members in each application, but the choice affects timing and how the family organises itself: it is best decided with a consultant.

If you receive a notice of intended refusal you have only 10 days to submit your observations: read our guide to the notice of refusal under Article 10-bis.

After a refusal remember that the EU Court of Justice (judgment C-578/08) held that the minimum income cannot be applied automatically, without looking at the specific situation. The administration does not always follow this: such arguments are raised in court, with the support of the lawyers of our law firm.

If the family member you want to join is an Italian citizen, different rules apply: read the guide to family reunification with an Italian citizen.

Other requirements besides income

Income is only one of the requirements. The figures come from the 2026 social allowance (€7,101.12 a year), increased by half for each family member you want to reunite.

Does my spouse’s income count?

Yes, if your spouse lives with you: to prove that the income is available, the income of the family members who live with the applicant is also taken into account. In the calculator you can enter it in the second field.

What changes if I reunite two or more children under 14?

The required income cannot in any case be lower than twice the social allowance, that is €14,202.24 in 2026. With two children the calculated threshold equals this amount; with more family members the threshold is higher.

Can I still apply if my income is below the threshold?

The threshold is a legal requirement checked by the Prefecture, and nobody can guarantee the outcome of an application. Before applying it is worth checking whether other income can be added, whether it makes sense to split the request and how to document every lawful source of income. If you receive a notice of intended refusal you have only 10 days to reply.

Is the calculator’s result official?

No. It is an informational tool based on the 2026 social allowance and Article 29 of the Italian Immigration Act. The check is carried out by the Immigration Desk (Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione) at the Prefecture, which assesses documents and requirements.

Can you help me with the application?

Yes: you can book a consultation online or in one of our offices. The Basic consultation costs €199 (30 minutes); the Priority one costs €249 (45 minutes, same-day appointment, written summary and 7 days of WhatsApp support, credited toward our quote if you hire us). Prices include VAT, with secure online payment through Stripe.
